Frequently Asked Questions
Get instant answers to the most common questions about body armor, protection levels, sizing, and more.
What are NIJ protection levels?
NIJ (National Institute of Justice) protection levels are standardized ratings that indicate what types of ballistic threats body armor can stop. The levels range from IIA (basic handgun protection) to IV (armor-piercing rifle protection). Each level is tested against specific ammunition types at defined velocities to ensure consistent protection standards.
What's the difference between soft and hard armor?
Soft armor (Levels IIA, II, IIIA) is made from flexible materials like Dyneema or Kevlar and protects against handgun threats. It's lightweight, concealable, and comfortable for daily wear. Hard armor (Levels III, IV) uses rigid plates made from ceramic, steel, or composite materials to stop rifle rounds. Hard armor is heavier and bulkier but provides protection against high-velocity rifle threats.
How do I determine my correct armor size?
Proper sizing is critical for effective protection. Measure your chest circumference at the widest point, typically just under your arms. The armor should cover your vital organs from the base of your throat to just below your sternum, and from side to side covering your vital organs. Always refer to our detailed sizing chart and consider professional fitting for optimal protection.
Can body armor be adjusted for different body types?
Yes, most modern body armor systems include adjustable features like side straps, shoulder adjustments, and modular components. Carrier systems can accommodate different torso lengths and body shapes. However, the protective panels themselves cannot be altered, so choosing the correct size initially is essential.
How should I clean and maintain my body armor?
Clean soft armor carriers regularly with mild soap and water, air dry only (never use heat). Inspect armor panels monthly for damage, delamination, or wear. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Hard plates should be inspected for cracks or damage after any impact. Never dry clean, machine wash, or expose to excessive heat.
How long does body armor last?
Soft armor typically has a 5-year warranty and service life under normal conditions. Hard armor plates can last 10+ years with proper care. However, environmental factors, frequency of use, and storage conditions affect longevity. Always check manufacturer guidelines and replace armor that shows signs of damage or has exceeded its recommended service life.
Is it legal to own body armor?
In most U.S. states, it's legal for law-abiding citizens to purchase and own body armor. However, some states have restrictions for convicted felons, and a few states have specific regulations. Always check your local and state laws before purchasing. We cannot ship to certain restricted areas and may require background verification for some orders.
Can I travel with body armor?
Domestic travel with body armor is generally legal, but airline policies vary. Check with your airline before traveling. International travel may require permits or may be prohibited entirely in some countries. Always research destination country laws and declare armor at customs when required.
What does 'multi-hit capability' mean?
Multi-hit capability refers to armor's ability to stop multiple rounds. NIJ testing requires soft armor to stop multiple hits in close proximity. However, armor effectiveness can be compromised after impact, especially with hard plates. While armor may stop multiple rounds, it's designed as a life-saving measure, not for prolonged engagement.
What is backface deformation (BFD)?
Backface deformation is the indentation created on the back of armor when it stops a bullet. NIJ standards limit BFD to 44mm (1.73 inches) to prevent serious blunt trauma injury. Even when armor stops a bullet, the wearer may experience bruising or injury from the energy transferred through the armor.
Which protection level do I need?
Protection level depends on your specific threat assessment. Level IIIA is most popular for general protection and concealed carry, stopping most handgun threats. Level III or IV is necessary for rifle threat protection but requires hard plates. Consider your environment, mobility needs, and comfort requirements when choosing.
What's the difference between overt and covert armor?
Covert armor is designed to be worn under clothing and remain hidden. It's typically thinner, more flexible, and available in neutral colors. Overt armor is worn over clothing and may include external pouches, attachment points, and tactical features. Covert armor prioritizes concealment while overt armor focuses on functionality and additional carrying capacity.
How long does shipping take?
Standard shipping typically takes 3-7 business days. Express shipping options are available. Some custom or made-to-order items may require additional production time. We'll provide tracking information once your order ships and notify you of any delays.
